Ethereum Foundation Sees 2 More High-profile Departures

Two top researchers resigned from the Ethereum Foundation on Monday, bringing the total number of significant departures at the organization to at least eight in recent months.

Julian Ma and Carl Beek, both Ethereum Foundation researchers, have completed their four- and seven-year stints with the organization.

Ma contributed to Ethereum’s censorship-resistant properties and cross-layer bridge algorithms and strategies, while Beek contributed to the early Beacon Chain project, which introduced proof of stake to the blockchain.

Ma and Beek join a wave of high-profile departures from the Ethereum Foundation this year, with a total of five senior developers and researchers leaving in May alone.

Beek said in X post that he is leaving on May 29 and will spend time with his wife and one-month-old child.

Last year, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin announced major leadership changes and a fresh direction for the Foundation, a response to criticism from Ethereum users over the blockchain’s long-term roadmap, with Buterin aiming to bring fresh talent into the organization to rebuild the protocol for higher and faster throughput.

Recent resignations of members of the Ethereum Foundation

Earlier this month, the Ethereum Foundation announced that Barnabé Monnot and Tim Beiko, leaders of the Protocol Cluster team, will move on, while the other team leader, Alex Stokes, will go on sabbatical.

In April, Josh Stark, a key researcher and project manager, said he was leaving the organization, which came a day after Ethereum Foundation contributor Trent Van Epps announced his resignation.

In February, Tomasz Stańczak announced that he would step down from the position of co-executive director of the organization.
